Making Meatballs, A simple Serve with Pasta & Enjoy

Making Meatballs at home is really easy and as the title suggests I have include a simple sauce recipe too! The recipe for the meatballs is really simple and you can add them to a variety of dishes! Meatball soup for example. However leaving the soup behind for a while. here is a simple recipe to make the meatballs. The choice of side is a case of following the pasta packet instructions, in the pictures I have gone for spaghetti but this works with any choice of pasta really. Simple right?

So Meatballs are made from ground meat rolled into a small ball. Usually along with other ingredients, such as bread crumbs, minced onion, eggs, butter, and seasoning. Meatballs are cooked by frying, baking, steaming, or braising in sauce. Seriously there are so many types of meatballs using different types of meats and spices that you could write an entire cookbook on the subject.

A Making Meatballs Base Recipe

As with most things in cooking once you have that base recipe down you can then expand. The base recipe for meatballs Involves the following Ingredients: 250 g Minced Beef. 60 g breadcrumbs (1 or 2 slices of bread ground in a food processor.) 1 egg beaten. 1/2 onion finely diced, good amount of sea salt and black pepper. Optional but not if you get me?: 2 tbsp Parsley, 2 tsp Dried Oregano.

To assemble said ingredients is rather easy. The top tip here is when rolling the meatballs do so with wet hands. Mix together the beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, onions seasoning and the optional but not optional parsley and oregano. Mix until just combined and then using wet hands roll into the desired size ball. The bigger the ball the longer to cook and less you get. At this point you could roll the balls around small pieces of cheese to create cheesy meatballs. Once you have made the balls up place in the fridge for 10 mins to firm up.

To cook the meatballs lightly dust with them with flour then fry on a medium high heat. Cook until browned all over. Depending on the recipe meatballs can be cooked in the oven or on the stove top. If using the oven heat to 180°c and cook for 25 mins.

So Talking sides for the meatballs. For me a classic spaghetti and meatballs is always going to be a real winner. Once you have a simple sauce down you can take the meatball recipe above and just add to the sauce to finish cooking. The best part about this recipe is that it doesn’t involve going in the oven. This means we it will cut down on cooking time.

To make the simple speedy sauce you will need to acquire the following items: 1 tbsp olive oil. 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped and 1 garlic clove, crushed. 2 x 400g tin chopped or whole tomatoes, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 tablespoon tomato puree. A Pinch cayenne pepper, 1 beef or vegetable stock cube.

To Cook the Sauce: First Heat the oil in a pan over a medium high heat and add the chopped onion and garlic and saute for a couple of minutes until soft. Next add the tomatoes, cayenne and crumble in the stock cube. simmer gently for 10 to 15 mins. SEASON to taste and stir through the basil leaves.

Giving the meatballs a good sear first then finishing in the sauce when simmering will give the sauce extra flavour. This will also cook the meatballs through. While the sauce and meatballs are simmering away you can make the pasta. Follow the instructions on the packet for your chosen pasta.

Meatballs in a simple sauce

Ingredients

  • 250 g Minced Beef.

Instructions

Next add the tomatoes, cayenne and crumble in the stock cube. At this point add the meatballs and simmer gently for 10 to 15 mins. SEASON to taste and stir through the basil leaves.

While simmering the sauce and meatballs Follow the instructions on the packet for your chosen pasta.

  • Add the pasta to the dish and top with the meatballs and sauce
